O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when he was still in highschool. She advanced into the top 100 rounds due to the fact that judges were awed by her vocal performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the jury. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the bottom 3, and the bottom 2. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil has been consistently giving stellar performances since then, never fell below the three top performers. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil had defeated Goudie and became the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in Idol history. O'Neil received a phone call shortly after her win from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
