O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High school in 1981. She appeared in some commercials before moving from Wheaton, Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady made her debut in the industry by modelling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She first appeared on the screen with the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include programs for TV, independent movies, and several other shows. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC police drama NYPD Blue was her character. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary for ABC's NYPD Blue between 1993 to 1996. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actor in a Drama Series.
